Alexander Graham Bell needed a way to answer the newly invented phone and came up with "Ahoy-hoy." http://bit.ly/mcBNr "Hello" became the popular norm and these days, and it's just Mr. Burns from The Simpsons who use this quaint way to answer. But who's to say it won't make a come back?
